The Search for Wild

KHOI Radio Series

Show 1: What Does Wild Mean to You?

Produced by Ursula Ruedenberg, Virginia Kovach, Mark Edwards
At KHOI Community Radio, Ames, Iowa

The premier edition of The Search For Wild is an audio adventure, infused with the sounds of the natural world in Iowa, that explores the meaning of “Wild.”

A cross section of Iowans give their answers to the question: “What does wild mean to you?” Then Mark Edwards, former employee of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, and participant in the BeWildReWild Project, takes us on a journey to Ledges State Park in the Des Moines River Valley, to see how wildness manifests there. Later, he gives his personal vision for wildness.

Finally, we are introduced to the BeWildReWild project, within the context of what we explored in the Des Moines River Valley. The Search For Wild, edition 1 ends with a poem by one of the show’s producers, Virginia Kovach. The process of making this show – which had its own wild moments – inspired her poem.
